Dear Yuuichi:

Your letter of March 14th was waiting for me when I returned from California two days ago.

It was a surprise to learn of Watanabe's interview with the CBS reportes. I did not think he would grant one with an American television company. I have not heard from them as of now. I was also surprised to learn that they had a letter from Lou Zamperini. I have been trying for years to contact Lou without success. He lives in Torrance, California, but evidently has an unlisted telephone number. It would be very interesting to know what he said in his letter to Watanabe.

Do not feel bad about speaking frankly about Watanabe. No one can criticize you when you speak frankly and honestly. I do understand and appreciate your concern as I also have some degree of sympathy for him now. It is sad that his son had to learn about his father's past to suddenly and after so many years have passed. I do not think that W.has very much to to fear from Lou as he became very religious soon after the end of the war. In fact, the Foreword in his book, which was published in 1956, was written by Billy Graham, the Baptist evangelist. I am enclosing a copy of the Foreword and first chapter of the book so that you can see what I mean. I only have a photocopy of the book. The revelation of the interview next year will cause a sensation among many of the X-POWs. Hopefully, I will know the time of the broadcast so that I will be able to notify some of the individuals on my list. I would not like to be around some of them when they hear it.

Mrs.Endo's desire to have the financial expenses ( editing fees and other costs ) discussed before proceeding with the translation makes the need to clarify my three previous statements, which you and she questioned, unnecessary. She does not need to be concerned about the manuscript being rewritten, or shorten, because I have cancelled ( stopped ) Mrs.Carroll from doing any work on it. I will write Mrs.Endo and ask her about what the financial costs should amout to for me. I am also unfamiliar with costs of editing and publishing, especially in Japan. I must respect Mrs.Endo's ability and knowledge in this matter.

I want to take this opportunity to again thank you and Mrs.Endo for all you have done for me.

Sincerely
BOB
