Dear Yuichi:

I got your letters of Septeber 28th and October 2nd when I got back from South Padre Island ( southern tip of Texas ). I had to use a free round trip airline ticket before the 14th of this month, so I went down to Brownsville and the island to visit friends. It will take me several days to complete this letter because I am waiting for some information before making decixions regarding the manuscrip and if I shall try to get on an Air Force flight scheduled to go to Germany on the 20th. of October. I would like to get a Eurorail ticket to go to northern Italy ( Milan, Genoa, Florence ) and to Switzerland. I should not be going anywhere now as I have so much to do here.

When I return from a trip it is hard to get my correspondence answered quickly. I had six overseas letters when I got home this week. One concerned the death of George Plimer, which I mentioned to you in my last letter. Another one informed me of the death of "Tiiger" Lewis in England. This was a surprise because he appeared in good health when I saw him last November.

Thank you for the map of Tokyo. It is a big help in identifying buildings and other points of interest. I bought a map of the city several weeks ago, but it is no help in locating buildings and other important locations; such as , hotels.

Your comments about Foo's book are interesting. I can understand why the footnotes were helpful to you because they gave you an additional explanation of the events mentioned. For me and other American readers, they distracted from Foo's statements and writings because they seemed to criticize what Foo was saying. They also took the reader's thoughts away from Foo's writings and thoughts.

I feel sorry that you could not get to Spain this month because the weather should be very nice now and not very hot. If I get back to Spain, I would like to go along the eastern coast and back to Seville. In Portugal, I want to see the area north of Lisbon. Southern Portugal and southwest part of Spain are hot, dry and not pretty. If I go on an Air Force plane to Europe, I could go to Spain instead of Italy because I am never sure of when it is going, if I can get on it, or where my final destination will be. It is a big gamble. I always have to be ready to adjust my plans in case there is a change in the schedule or in thedestination. However, this uncertainty is what make traveling on Air Force planes adventurous.

I am very thankful for the detailed information about the publishing costs and how the revenue ( money from the sale of the book ) will be distributed. It has been most helpful in my understanding of the financial arrangements.

The information and additional advice for which I have been awaiting ( wanting ) has now been received. All of the information reconfirms ( agrees with ) what I have said in my previous letter of September 9th. I will not pay to have the manuscript published and I will not agree fo you or anyone else to pay for the publishing or for the pre-purchase ( paying before publication ) of a given number of books. I regret that I did not know about this type of arrangement a long time ago because it would have saved of us a great amount of work. I am particularly sorry ( regret ) for you because you have spent so much time and effort in translating the manuscript. Your willingness to assist me is greatly appreciated and it will not be forgotten. If an agreement with a publisher could have been made, then I would want to divide the royalties when you in order to compensate you for translating the manuscript. However, I must also say that I would not agree to your adding your own comments ( thoughts and additional information ) to the translated manuscript because I would want it to be solely ( only ) a translation of my work. I hope you can understand and appreciate my feelings about this desire. It is not meant to be any reflection upon you. I realize and know that my feelings will end any possibility of the manuscript being published by T/S. However, if T/S or some other publisher is willing to make some other type of financial arrangement, I will be willing to consider it. Otherwise, this will put an end to the attempts to get the manuscript published in Japan.

I cannot stop you from continuing the translation if you want to do so, but I suggest that you enjoy life and take the trip to Spain.

I am now planning to try to get on the AF flight to Europe on the 20th and I expect to have gone for 2 or 2 1/2 weeks.

I will end this letter now so that I can get it in the mail today. It has taken me several days to complete it.
