May 21.
( Thurs)
- Left Kelly AFB aboard a C-5 bound for RAF Mildenhall in England. at 4:30 pm.10 1/2 hrs.
22. - Arr. 8:30 am. Train to London. Stayed at the Victory Services Club (app.$37/nights) for four nights.
23. - Spent most of day with Robert Hall, a younger cousin from Los Angles, who had been in Scotland on business. He could not meet me at Rule's Restaurant (Est.1798 ) for super.
24.(Sun.) - Toured the replica of the Globe Theatre.
25. - Tom Wade came in from Chigwell for a visit.
26.(Tues.) - Flew commercial to Oslo, Norway, to stay five nights with Johan Johansen, who had been in Omori POW Camp wite me.
27. - Toured the old fortress and the Norway Resistance Museum. Very interesting. Led by a former resistance fighter.
Drove to the top of a mountain to view the area from the telecommunication tower. Great view. Johan's son met us at a nearby restaurant for a 3 o'clock lunch. The son is a play writer and wrote the script for Robert Mitchum's last movie.
28. - I walked around the downtown area in the morning.Johan joined me for the light rail ride to Kristian Ottosen's apartment. He has written numerous books and was a POW of the Germans. He had given me a copy of his book about the Norwegians captured by the Japanese ( in Norwegian ). Unfortunately, it was an inconvenient time for him as he had to get the last chapter of his newest book to the publisher the next day. I was thankful he took the time for us to meet. He and his wife were delightful hosts. Johan and I had supper at Louise Restaurant on the waterfront. Dood meal.
29.(Fri.) - Took the ferry to see Capt. Arne Karlsen, who had been in Omori and we had smoked ou pipes as he told me about his adventures at sea. It was a very long and steep walk up to his home because the buses were on strike. The visit with the Captain and his wife was worth the effort. She served us a very large lunch. The Captain and I were again able to smoke our pipes and visit after 53 years. Their daughter and her husband drove us down to the ferry.
30. - Visited the Viking Ships Museum and the Maritime Museum. Had an enjoyable visit and supper with the family of Johan's daughter
31.(Sun.) - Had to fly back to England. I hated to leave because Johan was a good host and we were compatible. It had been a great visit with everyone. Arrived too late for the free military bus from Heathrow airport to RAF Mildenhaoo ( by 20 minutes ). Had to take the long and expensive way. Fast train to Paddington Station, taxi to King's Cross Station, train to Ely and taxi to Mildenhall. Got a room at the officer's Club ($14/ nights ).
June 1. (Mon.)to.4.

- Few planes into Mildenhall with Space Available. Some active duty people got out. One morning I went to Newmarket to see the Horse Racing Museum. The chances of getting a military flight back to the States did not appear to be very good. I decided to make a reservation on a commercial flight for Saturday, if I did not get on a military flight by Friday. Fortunately, I was able to stay at the Officer's Club.

5.(FRI) - I got lucky. First Category Six ( Retiree ) to get on a flight since last Sunday. The C-135 ( Tanker ) took ten people to Fairchild AFB in Spokane, Washington. Left Mildenhall at 3pm. Lots of room to spread out to rest on the sling meshed seats. Spent time with the flights crew. I knew we had a good pilot when I saw his name - Captain Buzzard. Clear and beautiful view of Greenland. Hug glaciers. Arrived Fairchild at 4pm. Too late to get a commercial flight to Texas. Spent night in a motel ($59).
6. - 11:00am.Southwest A/L flight to San Antonio, Texas, via Boise ( Idaho ), Reno( Nevada ), Los Angles ( Calif.) .
Arr.San Antonio at 8:55pm. Taxi to Kelly AFB to get my car. Stayed at La Quinta Motel.
June 7
(Sun.)
- Home. Thanks to Johansen, it was a great trip.
