マーティンデール氏と八藤雄一先輩の手紙

Nov 3(Fri 6am),2000

Dear Yuichi:

I was very glad to get your card dated the 22nd because it clarified some of the questions I had about my interview for The Japanese TV.

Ms.(Mika) Yamamoto called me several weeks ago and asked me if I would be willing to do it. I said-"Yes". The tentative dates were for Nov.8,9 or 10. Although her English is good, I had a difficult time in hearing what she said because her voice was very soft spoken. I got the impression that the reason for the interview was about the Mass given on Christmas in Omori. I told her that I could not give her any information about it because I did not attend it. She asked about three X-POWs, who I presume attend the Mass. I told her two were dead and that I had never heard anything about the third one. I also mentioned that they should contact you. Yesterday, just before I went to the Post Office and got your card, she called me to see if the interview could be delayed until the following week because the people from Japan could not get here next week. This was alright with me. It took some of the pressure off of me in trying to get a lot of things done before next week. My trips, in 2 weeks, to Brownsville ( 6 days ), San Antonio ( 2 days ) and to Temple ( 2 days ) made me get behind in what I needed to do before the interview. This will also give me time to prepare my thoughts and the material for the interview. Your card was a big help in knowing what I should say and do. Until then, I was very uncertain about what they expected from me. I will be taking them to the Nimitz Museum. I told Ms.Yamamoto that I was scheduled to go to South Carolina on the 20th. to be with my youngest daughter and family at their beach house near Charleston for Thanksgiving and would be back here on the 27th.

The TV crew should be very glad that they did not come here this week because we are having a lot of rain. It is raining very hard right now. My rain gauge shows over 4 1/2 inches since 2p.m. yesterday. It is expected to be rainy until early next week.

I am glad that Hap Halloran was so well received in Japan. He is a nice person who likes to be the center of attention. I expect to hear from him soon. I will write Nori N. as soon as I get a little more information. Joe A. will be disappointed in not getting the letter of apology because it will hurt his ego ( self esteem ).

Thanks again for the card.

Sincerely
Bob
