マーティンデール氏と八藤雄一先輩の手紙

Jan 20, 2003
Dear Yuichi:

Yes, I am a very fortunate person. I realized when I typed the date on this letter that it was sixty years ago on this date in the South Pacific when our plane was shot down and I managed to to survive the crash. I am very thankful that I have been able to survive the bad times and to have enjoyed the good times during those years. I have been especially fortunate in having a family which has shown me so much love. A devoted family is the greatest achievement that a person can have in this life. I am very proud of mine.

My son Dan ( Austin ) is the oldest of the three children. Then Anne ( San Antonio ) and Mary ( Charlotte, NC )

Dr.Bill Wicheta was my dentist since 1960 when we moved to Austin. Upon his retirement, his son Tom has taken over the office and the care of my teeth. They are good dentists and a fine family. There is a city in Kansas which is named after an American Indian tribe called the Wichitas. However, there are not any connections between the Indians and my dentists. There is a slight difference in the spelling of the names. Virginia is Bill's wife.

The domments about the dried potato slices and Tobita were interesting. The slices are available here in the States . They are used by the people who are going hiking and camping.

Takeo is to be complimented on her work in organizing thePOW researchers. That is a major achievement. I have expressed my admiration for her. Nori is able to be admired for what she has done in helping all of the POWs who have gone to Japan. She has gained the respect of the members of the ADBC when she has gone to their meetings. She said that she may go to the meeting in New Mexico this May. I will plan to go there if she does make the trip.

I must admit that I am also showing some of the effects or aging. I am still active and can continue doing my usual activities, but at a more leisurely pace or speed. I do allow for more time in resting or doing very little. It is now time to do some "goofing off" ( to do nothing ), so I will close by giving you and your family my best wishes.

Sincerely
Bob

P.S. I forgot to answer your question about Grojean and Cavanaugh.

The National Museum of the Pacific War ( as the entire facility is noe called ) is now owned by the State of Texas and is administered and operated by the department called Texas Parks and Wildlife. Joe Cavanaugh is the Director of the museum. Helen McDonal is the Assistant Director.

The Admiral Nimitz Foundation is a private ( not supported by the state ) organization which raises money and provides additional support ( volunteer workes and etc. ) to the museum. RADM ( Reader Admiral ) C.D. Grojean, USN Re., is the Executive Director of the foundation. The foundation originally started and developed the museum before the state of Texas acquired it.

The two organizations working together has ensured the permanency of the museum and its finacial stability.
