Dear Yuichi: I apologize for the delay in answering your letter. It arrived while I was out of town. I was gone again and then came down with a mild case of flu. I want to thank you for giving me permission to use the photo of Watanabe. I do understand the possible legal problems and I will respect your wishes. When I was rewriting the incident about the Japanese soldier offerring me the Sake, I recalled the individual being very similar to you in statue. This made me think about the possibility of perhaps it was you. Therefore it was necessary for me to verify or eliminate any such possibility.I must admit I had hoped it was you as it would have been a nice rememberance since we are now corresponding with each other after so many years. Sand fleas, lice and bed-bugs were a problem.The infestation of bed-bugs became so bad during the summer of 1945,the men in Barracks No.2 (all British) were forced to sleep out-side for several days while the sleeping decks were repeatedly washed with hot water and soap. I recall Tojo complained about them when he was in Omori. I feel sure it would have been alright for you to have visited Omori after the 15th of August in 1945 as a number of Japanese were visiting us in the barracks. The stories you have told in your letter are most enjoyable. I will remind Tom Wade of the " Tofu" incident.We are in regular correspondence with each other and I see him [Tom Wade]each time I am in England. His father had been a merchant in Chinabefore the war. He is still a handsome man. Major Francom was also a fine looking ma. He was very proper and formal. I had a brief visit with him in England in November, 1982. He died the following January. He was a graduate of Oxford. Commander Hurt was the skipper of the submarine. U.S.S perch. Hurt was the father figure for the young officers in Omori. He use to cut my hair. Commander Blinn was the Captain of a destroyer, U.S.S.Perch. Both vessels were sunk in the Java Sea Battle when the U.S.S.Houston was also sunk. I do know of Captain James serving as interpreter in Singapore. I have finally acquired a copy of his book-The Rise and Fall of the Japanese Empire. A book dealer in Houston, who is on a computer network, is trying to get me copies of all the books written by former POW's in Omori for my collection, which will go to a museum. He has not been successful in locating a copy of Bush's Clutch of Circustance. I do have a Xerox copy of the portion about Omori. I must stop now as I am weeks behind in answering my correspondence.
