  Dear Mr.Hatto;

It is a pleasure to make contact with you after so many years. I want to thank you for the five photographs you gave to Sam to send to me. They will make another aspect of life in Omori. I am particularly happy to get the one showing you and Watanabe. I remembered everyone in it; although not the names of the other two men and the girl. The POW's used to wave to her as they went to work.

I am enclosing several Zerox copies of photos which should be of interest to you. The first one shows a Navy plane flying over the camp.I have always wondered if that was the same one which dropped a case of cocoa to us. The wooden case bounced on the street and broke open when it hit near the window of the office where Watanabe used to sit and watch us. I had taken over the office after the Emperor's speech.I was the POW Camp Work Officer. I was covered with cocoa. I then had someone in the watch tower to warn us whenever a plane was in the area.

The second picture shows the Tokyo-Yokohama area right after the March 9-10,1945, fire-bombing. The white areas under the clouds were the ones completeburnt out that night. You can also see the island of Omori. I will send you a hard copy of the camp photo as soon as I can have some developed.

I am also enclosing a photograph of Japanese solidier who is unidentified. He looks like you. Can you give me a positive identification?

I regret you did not have a very successful time in contacting some former POW's when you were here in 1952. I have sent a Zerox copy of your article and of your photos to Dr.Goad. He will be happy to see them.

Again, thank you for your kindness.

Sincerely,
Robert R.Martindale
Lt.Col.Ret
