Dear Yuichi:
Time is going by very rapidly and there is so much that needs to be accomplished(**いい男だRobは**).
The other night while having dinner with friends I said that I should have
some new calling cards made as the "Gentleman of Leisure" did not seem appropriate
now. This was said in jest (joke). Whenever I send out the list of current
X-POW addressed I receive a lot of mail. Many give necessary changes and
others just say-"Hello". It is a good feelings to know that many friendships
have been renewed. Now that my son is living in Austin and my oldest daughter
is in San Antonio I am enjoying spending more time with them. Their birthdays
are this next week and we will be going to South Padre Island (southern
tip of Texas near Brownsville where we use to live ) to celebrate. I will
be gone from Wednesday (7th) until Monday (12th). I am hoping to get some
time to fish. I will then leave on Wednesday (14th) for San Francisco. I
have a meeting at the Press Club on Thursday with a friend, who did a documentary
(TV) about Iva Toguri and how she was falsely accussed of treason for broadcasting
on Japanese radio. It is being shown on some of the Public Broadcasting
Systems TV stations. We will be meeting with a lady (writer and editor)
who is now reviewing my manuscript. I believe her husband is a literary.
They have good publishing contacts and were anxious to read my manuscript
after Tony told them about it. Maybe some good will come from the meeting.
Afterwards, I will visit an aunt and uncle in Benicia and with my youngest
daughter and family as they all live in the Bay Area. My daughter wants
me to go with them to Lake Tahoe for the long weekend of the 23rd. I don't
know yet if I will go with them. Now I will try to answer your specific
questions. Although I understand and appreciate the reasoning for making
deletions and changes in order to make the manuscript more satisfactory
for the Japanese readers, I am hesitant at this time to authoraize any major
changes or deletions as I want to wait until after the meeting in San Francisco
on the 15th.Please forgive me for the delay in giving a firm answer now.
I have no problem with the need to make a change in the title, but I cannot
think of any which would be appropriate. I might as well admit that there
is something which has been bothering me for a long time. A very simple
answer was all I wanted and expected from Mrs.Endo when I asked her if she
thought her publisher might be interested in my manuscript. Now I am concerned
about the amount of time, effort and perhaps expense she hase spent on my
behalf. I did not expect her to go to so much trouble, but I am very thankful
for what she has done for me. However,I am concerned about how to compensate
her, or what she may expect for her efforts in view of my limited financial
resources and retirement income. I believe you can understand why this matter
concerns me. I appreciate and am thankful for what you have done for me(**いいこと言うね**).
I know you will have a good trip to Australia in October. I have always
wanted to see Sydney, but we were shot down just before our crew was to
go on leave there. I want to make another big trip in September, but I do
not know where it will be as of now. I will just have to wait and see where
the Air Force planes are going at that time and how my bank account is then.
Thank you for everything. Sincerely, Rob |
