Dear Mrs.Endo:

Mr.Hatto has written me about your desire to discuss the translation, editing, copyright and other cost before continuing with the translation of my manuscript. I must admit that I am not very knowledeable about the financial details of publishing, especially in Japan. Therefore, I must rely upon your experience and knowledge in such matters.

I would appreciate hearing from you as to what you think these cost would be to me. Naturally, I would like to keep them as low and reasonable as possible. Perhaps we could arrange to share some of the cost and to agree to share on a percentage basis any royalties from the sale of the publication in Japan.

In regards to your concern about my having someone rewrite and edit the manuscript, I will say that I had considered hiring someone to rewrite it. A friend, who was a senior editor for CBS television and is now a journalist and author, advised me not to do so. She said the present manuscript is good and should preserved as is for historical reasons. Also, any rewrite should be done by me. Therefore, I will not have it done by anyone else. However, I do not know if I want to undertake the long time job of rewriting. It would take me a year to finish it. I doubt it will be done.

I will FAX this letter to you and send a copy by air mail to Mr.Hatto.

I want to thank you for the work you have done on my behalf.

Sincerely
Robert R.Martindale
