Dear Yuichi;
Last week I took corrected paper and computer disc copies of the manuscript
to the publisher. The corrections included the ones which you had mentioned
in an earlier letter and the corrected story about Lou Zamperini; plus,
some type errors I had found.
Ed Eakin, the publisher, was interested in having more photographs of
the Japanese personnel in order to make the book more interesting to
readers in Japan. I would like to include three additional photographs
which you had given me, but I want your permission to do so. The three
photos are noted on the enclosed list of preliminary captions. I will
be rewriting the list and I would like to include a reference to your
attending an American university on a Fulbright(?) scholarship. You
mentioned this fact in one of your early letters, but my memory is not
clear about it. When did it occur?
I am sorry the photo which W. took of me and Private Ito was lost when
it was given to a photographer to be copied soon after the war.
The publisher will be sending five copies of the galley proof ( preliminary
printing ) to various individuals for their brief comments, or statements,
about the book so that they can be used in the publicity campaign. Admiral
Grojean ( Adm. Nimitz Foundation ) and a professor of military history
at the University of Texas at Austin have already agreeded to read it.
An Air Forece general and a public figure are being asked to read it
and make a statement. I would like to have your approval to read it
and make a statement. Will you do it?
Ed Easkin is also interested in sending a galley proof to a reputable
publishing company in Japan for its consideration to publish a Japanese
edition. Do you have any suggestions or recommendations? I do not want
you to go to the trouble of trying to find one. I only want your thoughts
about a company, if you know of any, which may be willing to read the
galley proof. Perhaps Sam or someone else may know of a company to which
Eakin can write.
My youngest daughter and grand-daughter came form North Carolina yesterday
afternoon. Later this morning ( Saturday ) they and my son and I will
drive to San Antonio to see my other daughter. I will finish this letter
after I return on Sunday. I have not seen them since before they moved
from California to Charlotte. I have been too busy to go there.
Your letterof April 8 was waiting for me when I returned from San Antonio,
so I will also reply to it now.
The W. tape I was referring about was the long interview Simon had with
Watanabe at the hotel. It would be interesting to see the reaction of
W. to all of Bob Simon's questions. I would like to see the two hour
tape of the interview, but I do not believe CBS would release it to
anyone ( let anyone see it ). Therefore, I do not expect to see it.
I hope Professor Usami was able to get some information about Newman
from Tom Wade. I wrote Tom Quilliam and Peter Paul for information about
Newman, but I have not received an answer to my questions about Newman
nor about the identity of the work party shown in the photographs you
sent me. I will let you know as soon as I receive any information from
them.
I was surprised to learn that TomWade had not seen the CBS tape about
the Zamperini show. I thougt CBS would have sent from him a copy. I
will see that he gets a copy. I sent a copy to George Parvin, who lives
near London, and asked him to send copies to the other X-POWs in the
London area. Last Friday, I received a letter from his daughter telling
me that George had died last December. She said she would try to send
copies of the tape to the other people. I will ask her to send one to
Tom. I will write her after I finish this letter to you.
Thank you for your compliment about my keeping the list of names and
current addresses. I do receive some satisfaction in doing it. The list
has brought many people together as you noted in your diagram.
Mr.&Mrs. Ishizuka (sp) ? The (sp)? indicates that there is a question
about the correct spelling of the name.
I still plan to try to get on the AF plane to Frankfurt on the 22nd.
However. I am not sure about where I will go from there. I have not
had time to think about it very much because I have been very busy.
I will call the Frankfurt AF Base today and try to find out if they
have any flights going to Oslo, Norway, or to England on about the 25th.
I would like to see some of the Norwegians who were in Omori. I will
not be able to make a decision until I get to Frankfurt and find out
for sure where the planes will be going to at that time. I will have
a Euro-rail pass with me in order to give me some flexibility in traveling
in Europe, if I need it.
Thank you for the informative letter and the photo. I will have the
photo copied and enlarged. A copy will be sent to Peter Paul. May I
use it in the book? I vaguely remember Nishida.
Sincerely
Bob
