  Dear Yuichi:

Monday I received a call from a Domenic Azanne (sp?) in London. He is working on a documentary entitled-Secret Lives- which is to be shown on British TV (channel 4). Helen McDonald had referred him to me. He wanted to know about my meeting Tojo and what I thought of the war crimes trials. They are doing a something about the trials. He was surprised to learn that Tojo has visited a POW camp twice ( Omori ). I gave him your name because you were there during Tojo's second visit. So, be prepared to hear form him.

Your letter of June 23rd arrived yesterday. I am glad you had a good trip. I feel like you do about seeing the old church building . The more you see, the more they look the same. My favorite building in Spain was the Alhambra in Granada. This was because I had read so much about it as a child. The most impressive place, or sight, was Gilbralta because it was so different from any other place. I travel to see the country, (geography ), and to meet the people. Buildings and cities are of lesser interest to me . I do enjoy the unique, or different , things about an area; like bullfights or flamenco dancing . I still would liket to see a first class bullfight in Madrid and Seville. I hope the one you saw was a good one. I regret I did not get to Rondo.

I was surrised to learn we were in London at the same time. It was strange Tom did not mention my visit with him. Neither did he tell me about your call when I called him later upon my return from Norway. He had asked me to get some information from Capt. Karlsen, which I did. I called him from King's Cross station, while I was trying to get from Heathrow to RAF Mildenhall, in order to give him the information. It was a quick call as I had only a few minutes. Evidently, he did not have time to mention your call. I also sent him the information by mail from Mildenhall. In thinking about my visit with him, I now recall that he was more reserved ( less open ) than usual. I believe he still resents the Naoetsu event and in not getting more attention, or publicity, from CBS. He is disappointed about his book not selling more copies ( a little over 4,000). I am hoping mine will sell that many copies.

Although I had expected that there would be some radical reaction to the CBS broadcast , I had not heard of any here. I believe those who have called for W.'s arrest are like the Brits who turned their backs to the Emperor. They have a very narrow viewpoint and do not see ( nor want to see ) or understand the broader aspects of the situation. They are trying to get attention to get attention to themselves. They are wasting their time and are making fools of themselves in showing that they do not know the legal side of the situation. The time for retribution and punishment is over. McArthur ended it when the Korean War broke out. W.'s punishment came when his son finally learned about his father's past and he now sees his father in a different light ( dark side ). W.has lost his son's respect.

Congratulations upon your dragonfly catch. It must have been a great thrill to accomplish such a goal. I do remember the Tokiko and I still have the one you gave me.

I hope you will be able to come to the States next summer for your conference. New York should be much nicer than Texas at that time of the year. Hopefully it will be a cooler summer than this one. As of now, I do not have any travel plants for June, July and August. I do have a commitment in mid-May and I may be in Europe during March-April. There is still a lot of time to discuss future plans.

This September I will be in Richmond, Virginia, for a meeting and in Charlotte,NC, to see my youngest daughter. Then in Cotober, I will be at a meeting in Louisiana.

I have not heard about any correspondence between Mrs.Endo and the Norwegians.

Have a good summer.

Sincerely
B0b
Robert R.Martindale
