Dear Yuichi:
I received your letter of the 22nd. yesterday (Saturday ) and decide to
answer it now while my thoughts are fresh; although it will not get there
before you leave for Austria.
Thank you for your approval to give the photo of W. to the Nimitz Museum.
I will convey your worries and thoughts to Helen. I also have some sympathy
for W. He must be having a very difficult time now.
It will be interesting to learn about Tojo's possible visits to other
camps. I wrote the editor of the FEPOW NEWS in England to keep me inform
if anyone else responded to the request for information about any other
visits. I also suggested that he ask his readers to think about this questions
- " Why would a war-time leader of a nation make at least two visits
to POW camps?". This should bring some interesting responses.
I have called ten people so-far this week-end and I have asked them if
they remembered Tojo's visits. Most of them could not remember it or could
not provide any significant information. Tom Wade and A.L.( AL ) Hankin
were the only ones who could say anything of importance. Hankin could
remember only one visit and thought it was in 1944, but several things
he said indicates it may have been in 1943. One was that they had at least
a day's notice of Tojo's coming to the camp. He is going to try to remember
more about the visit. I have not been able to contact Frank Tinker, but
will keep trying today.
The visit with my old Bomb Group reunion in Richmond, Virginia, was nice.
Although I remembered only four people (most of them were replacement
after I was shot down ), it was a good visit. The three nights I spent
in Charlotte, North Carolina, with my daughter were very good and enjoyable.
Sincerely
Bob
