マーティンデール氏と八藤雄一先輩の手紙

Sep 2, 1999

Dear Yuichi:

Thank you for the copy of the paper with the picture of you looking up at the dome of the Capitol. It is a good photo. The Fulbright program had produced more scholarships, up to that time, than I had realized. It has been a very good program.

Regardless of what Joe Alexander had said, I agree with you about his not being a diligent letter writer. His wife used to response to some of the letters I had written him years ago. He has not replied to my last two letters. Now I do not worry about it.

Yesterday I contacted Kelly Air Force Base in San Antonio to find out the September flight schedule to Europe. The three flights are going to Germany and not to England. The timing is not suitable for me. No flights are scheduled for Japan this month; which is rather unusual. There are two scheduled for Hawaii. It does not appear that Joe will be going to Japan this month Via AF planes. However, the schedule could be changed at any time. This is one of the things which make flying on Space Available so uncertain. You cannot be sure if you will be going nor when you will arrive at your intended destination. This is why Joe cannot tell you when he will arrive there. I will go on commercial flights whenever I have to make advance reservations ( hotel, meetings or etc. ) before I leave.

I would be glad to receive a copy of Mrs.Sasamoto's book about the POW camps. It would be a welcom addition to my collection; even though I cannot read it. I am enclosing some Zerox copies of photos of a camp at Kawasaki for Mrs.Sasamoto. There are several which may be of a Kawasaki camp.

I have not received any correspondence from Norway since before you went there.

This has been a rather disappointing year for me. Dental and medical appointments have made it impossible to get overseas and have limited my domestic travels. Staying home has not been very pleasant due to the extreme heat this past month. Austin has had 18 days of 100 degrees or more. Air conditions are On all the time. August has been the hottest month on record. Normally, we may have only several days with 100 degrees. I would like to be in England and Scotland now. Hopefully, our extremely hot weather is at an end because it has been in the mid-ninty's for the past four days.

My best wishes to you and your wife.

Sincerely
Bob
