Dear Yuichi:
My filmed interview has been completed and I am now trying to get back
on my usual routine.
The two people who were coming from Tokyo had to cancel because of some
scheduling conflicts. Ms.Mika Yamamoto, a cameraman and a soundman arrived
from Los Angles on Sunday. They spent 1 1/2 hours with me that evening
as they looked at the materials I have here. They were here at 8:30 a.m.
the next morning for filming. It was about 1:30 p.m. when we left in separate
cars to go to Fredericksburg. Two more hours were spent at the museum
while they filmed me and the items which I had given to the museum. Helen
McDonald was not able to be there because she was resting after having
a busy week-end conducting a symposium. Her assistant, Elizabeth Martindale
( no relationship to me ) was very nice and patient with us. She had the
plastic cover removed so that the film crew could get better pictures
of the items in the POW exhibit. This is very seldom, if ever, done because
the museum staff would have to re-dust ( clean ) each item later before
sealing the cover. I left there about 6p.m. to come home very tired. The
film crew drove on to San Antonio for the night. They interviewed Joe
Alexander the next morning and then went to Canyon Lake ( between here
and San Antonio ) to interview Charles Butterworth in the afternoon. The
film crew were very nice and I was impressed by the way in which they
worked. I hope they were satisfied with the filming. I am glad it is over
because I am not good at being interviewed. Butterworth is much better
than I am on film. I hope they will send me a copy of the film as shown
on Japanese TV.
Monday I leave for Charleston, South Carolina to meet with my youngest
daughter and her family from Charloote, North Carolina, to be with them
for the Thanksgiving holidyas at their beach house near Charleston. I
will be come back on Monday ( 27th. ). Then I will have some dental surgery
on an infected tooth which has been bothering me since last week.
I called Butterworth about his interview and to find out if he knew how
Joe A. about Takeo and Nori coming to the ADBC meeting in May. He said
that he understood that Joe had no objections to their being there. I
told this to Takeo in the letter which I have just finished writing to
her in answer to her letter which I have just received. I will write to
Nori later. I anticipate no problems with their attending the meeting
in May.
My best wishes to you and your family.
Sincerely
Bob
