Dear Yuichi: My health is improving. I did have a set-back about a month ago and just after I had finished taking the 45 days of medications for the inflammation of the cartilage ( which I described in my letter of 12/28 ). Two small and shallow ( not deep ) opening in the incision developed a mind infection. I have finished taking the anti-biotics medication and the openings appear to be closed. I am now feeling very good and I am starting to be more active for the first time in months. I have been busy during the past ten days in trying to catch-up on some of the things which needed immediate attention; such as, clearing my apartment, getting my annual federal income taxes paid and working on some of the research materials which have accumulated during the past six months. Now, I am starting to answer some of correspondence which has accumulated. The best way that I can describe my well-being is to say that I am now considering some travel plans. I may go to San Francisco in a few weeks because I do a lot of walking there and I need to get the exercise in order to regain my muscl strength. I would like to make an overseas trip in April. Iwill have to wait a few more weeks before I make any final decisions about traveling. I was glad to learn that you have the opportunity to attend the Fulbright reunion in Washington, D.C. in September. Please , do not let my health effect your decision to make the trip. Although I am anticipating to be in reasonable health at that time, it is difficult to say anything for sure at my age in life about what will happen in the future. I would enjoy showing you around San Antoni, Fredricksburg and Austin if you do decide to come to Texas. I could plan to meet you in Washington, D.C. if you decide not to come here. That would not be an inconvenience or problem for me. I would suggest that you talk with your travel agent about the advisability of taking out flight insurance in case your trip, or any part of it, has to be cancelled at the last minute. Incidentally, the ADBC is having its annual meeting in San Antonio in May. I am planning to be there. Nori and Taeko are considering attending it. I would enjoy showing them around this part of Texas. However, I wonder if they would consider the trip to be worthwhile ( expense and time ) since they were at the meeting last year. I can understand the difficulty they have in making the decision. Bill Barrette returned my telephone call. We had a most interesting talk for about thirty minutes. He is going to send me copies of some of Tobita's drawings. I suggested that they should be aware of the fact that some Japanese held at Sugamo Prison did not deserve to be there; especially. Pvt. Y.Kano. I am sending him a copy of Kano's prison diary ( in English ) so that he can get a better understanding of Kano's feelings. Bill did buy a copy of my book. I have not been able to contact Nuckolls, but I will keep trying to catch him at home. I appreciate the time and effort that you have done in getting the translations from Tobita and Yoshioka. Thank you. Nori did write me and I got a reply off to her on Friday so that she would get in before going to Hawaii. Yesterday(Saturday) I received a letter from Taeko and I will answer it as soon as I finish this letter to you. She wanted to know more about how the POW officers were paid by the Japanese. I will refer her to you for this information because you are the authority on this subject. I nearly forgot to mention something to you. If and when you and Nori and Taeko do come to Texas, you may be able to get a slightly cheaper air fare and a better schedule directly into and out of San Antonio instead of Austin. It will be no trouble for me to meet you there. If for some unforeseen reason I could not drive at the time my son will be very glad to do the driving. He lives in the same apartment complex where I live. We would go from San Antonio to Fredericksburg fot the day and then come to Austin before going back to San Antonio. It would be best to allow at least two nights in each city ( S.A. and Austin ) if your schedule will permit it. It is a very good feeling for me to be sitting back at my desk and working again. My best wishes to you and your family. Sincerely Bob Robert R. Martindale STAMP Mount McKinley.Alaska USA 80 ($0.80) |
