Dear Yuichi: I did not learn about Tobita's change in getting to Philly on the 27th until two days before my scheduled departure which was too late for me to reschedule my trip. This was a big disappointment for me. I flew into the Baltimore Washington airport and spent three nights in Baltimore because I had nnever been in the city. The National Aquarium was worth a visit.Otherwise , the visit was not very enjoyable. The day and a half of rain helped to make it less enjoyable. I took the train for the hour long trip to Philly on Friday morning. Philly in a much nicer city. The Raddison-Warwick Hotel, where we got a very good rate, was only two blocks from the Philadelphia Art Alliance. I met Barrette, his wife , Powell and his assistant ( Toyota ) and Mrs.Sato ath the gallery at noon on Saturday. Several former Sugamo America guards were also there. There were about 50 people in attendence for Bill's talk. The display was very good and I am very glad that I was able to see it. I was surprised by how many items were on displya. Saturday evening I was invited to join Bill's group for supper at a Japanese restaurant ( 12 people ). I went back to the gallery on Sunday so that I could spend more time looking at the exhibit when it was not crowed. Sunday night a summer cold which I must have gotten in Baltimore began to worsen. I decided to cut my trip short and come home on Monday. My back was able bothering me. When I got home I was ill with a very bad cold for about ten days. This has prevented me from answering any correspondence until now. I was sorry that I had to cut my trip short because I was debating about whether to go on up the East coast to Maine, where I had not been before, or to go to Annapolis and to Washington, D.C. to see the new location of the military branch of the National Archives. My coming home saved me from having to make that decision. The big news here has been the weather. The early forcast for the summer was that it would be hotter and drier than usual. That was suddenly changed when a low pressure area came in and stayed for four days over central Texas. The hill country, just to the west of Austin and from San Antonio to the north of Fredericksburg, received up to 20 inches of rain in four days. This created flooding problems for many locations in that area. I recorded about nine inches here. No flooding problems for Austin. We needed the rain. More rain in the forecast for the next two days. Sincerely Bob Robert R. Martindale |
